Customize Your Language and Keyboard

Set the default device language for your Fire tablet, and change how the onscreen keyboard for your device operates with features like auto-correction, next word prediction, and different keyboard languages.

To change your device language:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Language & Keyboard, and then tap Language. Select your language from the list that appears.
    Tip: Some languages offer additional regional settings. For example, if you choose French, you can select either French (France) or French (Canada). In addition to the device language, regional settings also change the device keyboard, numbers, dates, and more.

To change your keyboard language:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings, tap Language & Keyboard, and then tap Keyboard Language.
  2. Select your preferred language from the list that appears. Or, to download a new language, tap Download Languages, and then tap the language you want to download. To remove a keyboard language from your Active Keyboard Languages list, tap the checkbox next to the language.

    Note: If you're downloading a keyboard language for the first time, you will need to accept the Terms of Service before you can download the keyboard.

    Tip: When you're using the onscreen keyboard to type, press and hold the Spacebar on the keyboard to switch between languages.

Keyboard Settings

To configure auto-correct, spell-checking, and other feature settings:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings.
  2. Tap Language & Keyboard, and then tap Keyboard Settings.
  3. Tap the switch next to the following features to turn them on or off:
    • Sound on keypress - The keyboard will play a tone as you type.
    • Auto-correction - Words spelled incorrectly will be corrected automatically as you type.
    • Auto-capitalization - Words at the beginning of sentences will be capitalized automatically.
    • Advanced Keyboard - Secondary keys will be accessible by pressing and holding.
    • Next Word Prediction - The keyboard will predict the next word you are likely to type based on previously entered text.
    • Check Spelling - Words spelled incorrectly will be underlined.
    • Trace Typing - Enter words by tracing your finger from key to key.
  4. Tap Personal Dictionary to add words to your personal dictionary to enhance auto-correct suggestions.

Keyboard Tips

  • To access special characters, tap the ?1☺ key, and then tap the ~\< key. Tap the ABC key to return to the alphabetical keyboard.
  • If you have Next Word Prediction turned on, the keyboard will provide suggestions of the next word you will type. Tap a word in the list to select it.
  • To enable caps lock, double-tap or press and hold the Shift key. Single-tap the Shift key to exit.
  • For Kindle Fire HDX (3rd Generation), tap the microphone icon on your keyboard to use your voice to dictate text instead of typing.
