Adjust Your Kindle (1st Generation) Settings

The Settings page on your Kindle (1st Generation) allows you to register, personalize your Kindle, and view your available storage space.

Register or Deregister Your Kindle

Your Kindle must be registered to your Amazon.com account to use many of the features. If you received your Kindle as a gift and it was automatically registered to the purchaser's account, deregister it from their account. If your Kindle is lost or transferred to another user, deregister it from your account.

To register your Kindle:

  1. Move the wireless switch on the back of your Kindle to ON.
  2. Press the Home key.
  3. Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel.
  4. Select Settings from the menu.
  5. Scroll to the Account Name section and select Register. If an account name already appears, select Deregister.
  6. Enter your Amazon.com user name and password, and then select Done.

The account name appears when registration is successful.

To deregister your Kindle:

  1. Move the wireless switch on the back of your Kindle to ON.
  2. Press the Home key.
  3. Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel.
  4. Select Settings from the menu.
  5. Scroll to the Account Name section and select Deregister.
  6. Select OK from the confirmation screen.

The account name turns blank and the Register option appears when deregistration is successful.

Personalize Your Kindle

You can change the device name and enter personal info from the Settings menu.

To change your device name:

  1. Press the Home key.
  2. Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel.
  3. Select Settings from the menu.
  4. Select Edit by the Device Name section.
  5. Use the keyboard to type in the name that you want to appear.
  6. Select Done.

To change your personal info:

  1. Press the Home key.
  2. Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel.
  3. Select Settings from the menu.
  4. Select View/Edit from the Personal Info section.
  5. Use the keyboard to type in your contact information or other details.
  6. Select Done.

Primary Dictionary

The New Oxford American Dictionary is installed on your Kindle at the time of purchase. It is the only dictionary available as the default for Kindle (1st Generation).

Automated Annotation Backup

When the Backup of Annotations feature is enabled, your Kindle backs up the notes and bookmarks you make on content purchased from Amazon.com.

To enable or disable Backup of Annotations:

  1. Press the Home key.
  2. Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel.
  3. Select Settings from the menu.
  4. Select Enable or Disable by the Annotations section.

Available Memory

Your Kindle (1st Generation) can hold more than 200 items. You can add an SD card to hold up to thousands of additional items.

To view your available memory:

  1. Press the Home key.
  2. Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel.
  3. Select Settings from the menu.
  4. The memory status appears at the bottom of the screen.

The total amount of free memory is shown in megabytes for both your Kindle memory and SD card. The bars show your free space in gray and the used space in black.
